THE ROAD WITHOUT TURNING – Jason Brown

DV Front WebpageThe Road Without Turning is a great adventure story featuring spies and romance during WWI in France and originally published in 1932 in Adventure Magazine . The Road Without Turning was written by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson who was considered one of the most prolific writers of what was known as Pulp Fiction. It was so-called because these very PG-13 adventure stories were printed in magazines of the cheapest pulp paper. It’s not only a fun, “can’t put it down read” or “listen” in our case but also based on very solid military knowledge.

The Major drew his stories from his own adventure laden life chasing Pancho Villa on the Mexican border, commanding a Russian cavalry unit in WWI and playing polo in the Philippines while fighting the Moros. In 1935 the Major came up with the idea to publish comics using original artists and original scripts. He began with New Fun Comics. eventually leading to a relationship with Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster culminating in the creation of Detective Comics. and Superman.

Douglas Wheeler-Nicholson, son of the Major, continues the tradition of the Major’s panache and we deem him a chap’s chap worthy of the likes of both William Powell of The Thin Man films among others and William Holden in his role as the dashing playboy in Sabrina. We decided this was the right moment to capture the bright personalities and self-inventive style of both writer and reader.
